Online Survey Review

Are Online Surveys A Scam?

are paid online surveys scamsIf you are like me, I am sure you are interested to know “IF and how to make money with online surveys” and “are there legitimate online survey sites”.

Well, some time back, I set out to find answers to these two questions. I started with a simple search on Google, found some survey sites, signed up and began “doing surveys.

Here is my review and I will give you my verdict right away!

Verdict: Most Survey Sites Are Legit and YES, You Can Make Some Money!

Unfortunately I am not able to tell you that ALL survey sites are legit because there are a lot scammers in this branch of Internet Marketing as well as in any other branch of it. The good thing is however, that non-reputable sites are rather easy to spot and to avoid before you will lose any of your hard earned money.

Sites to AVOID

  • Those that advertise $150.00 per day taking surveys
  • Those that advertise $75.00/$90.00 per survey
  • Those that require you to pay a membership fee to join
  • Those that promise to give you the highest paid surveys for a small fee
  • Those that ask you for too many personal information like Social Security# or Bank/Credit Card account
  • Those that don’t have a Privacy Policy

How Does It All Work

You will find the process of becoming a paid survey taker quite simple and straight forward. You start out with a  search for “paid surveys“, how to make money with paid surveys” or any similar search phrase. This will give you a great number of survey sites you can join. Remember to skip those that belong obviously into the non-reputable category. Choose one like in the image shown here.

Reputable Survey Site

The sign-up procedure is easy and straight forward. The legit sites will ask you for your Name and Address only and you chose a password to be able to access your account in the future.

The next step for you is to take a “Personal Profile Survey” which takes an average of about 20 to 30 minutes. The questions you will answer help the survey providers to match you up with the right surveys. Why is this important you may ask?

There are surveys that target a specific market or demographics (i.e, population, age, income, education, preferences in “things, etc). For example, a survey about beauty products is looking for answers from females in a specific age group and may not be interested what I would have to say.

After you finished your Personal profile you are “good to go” and usually you can take your first survey right away (or maybe more?). From here on out you can expect e-mail notifications about a new survey for you and you also may log on to the site and check for surveys you may or MAY NOT qualify for. (More about the “not qualifying or being disqualified” later on).

At times the site you signed up with may not have a survey for you. So I suggest you spend your first hours signing up with several sites in order to find a survey whenever you feel like working. Some sites offer you a sign-up bonus, normally $5.00, whereas other sites offer you an instant deposit of $20,00 in your account if you link  FROM THEIR SITE to 10 other sites and sign up there as well.

How Do You Get Paid?

And that takes us to the HEART of my review. You should not expect to become a millionaire by doing surveys, nor should you hope to be able to quit your job and make a livable income from surveys alone. Compensation for your work (YES it is WORK sitting at your computer and truthfully answer all the questions without just rushing through a survey) varies from site to site. Basically there are THREE ways you will get paid:

Paid Reviews(1) Cash. The amount you will get varies widely from $0.50 to $50.00 (so I have been made to believe). I personally have not seen a “regular” survey that paid more than $3.00 (as you can see in the image to the right).

There are however surveys with a higher pay-out, but those are coupled with some kind of offer that requires you to SPEND money. I personally discredit those as SCAM and stay away from them. What good does it do me to spend $20.00 to get $18.00 back

(2) Points you can redeem for prices and in some cases for “CASH” in form of Gift Cards. This method is used by a lot of survey sites and kind of disappointing to me. You will get somewhere between 100 and 3,000 points for the survey IF you completed it without being disqualified for one reason or another.

In most case it will take 10,000 points to get the equivalence of $100.00. What I don’t like is that most sites have redeem thresholds and therefore it takes a long time before you will be able to redeem.

(3) Sweepstake Entries: Are you kidding me? This is like having a 9-to-5 job and getting paid with a LOTTERY ticket. You may win or you may not! In other words: You may get paid or you may not.

After this run-down of the payment options there are, I want to give you a short experience report about THREE of the sites I joined and took surveys for:

My Experience taking Surveys

Global Test Market:

This is a very reputable site that offers you several surveys per day via e-mail. Some of them are for MARKET POINTS, usually between 100 and 600 points, which you will get cash for once you reached the cash-out threshold (10,000 points for $100). Some others are for Sweepstake Points in varying point value.

The problem I see with GTM though is that it’s very difficult to qualify for the survey. Every survey starts with a pre-qualification that takes about 3 to 5 minutes. If you do not qualify you will get at least 100 sweepstake points.

The bigger problem however is the fact that you can be disqualified during taking of the survey, sometimes even after you have already completed 70%. And that was the main reason for me to stop taking surveys and closed my account.

Send Earnings:

Paid SurveyNo gimmicks there. You do the work – they send you a check. Unfortunately, their surveys don’t pay much and the pay-out threshold is at $30,00. They offer you ONE survey per day which pays $0.50 and a variety of others in the $0.50 to $6.00 range (difficult to qualify for those). After you received your FIRST check you are now a GOLD MEMBER and qualifying is somewhat easier.

Then you will receive 2 or 3 so called PAID e-mails per day which pay you TWO CENTS for just confirming the e-mail and looking at the attached offer. That can lead to some extra money……….but you may have to spend some first.

And you will earn some if you use their search engine (or the one they cooperate with), ONE CENT per search.  Taking all of that under consideration, it takes a lot of time to reach the pay out threshold, It took me 5 weeks before I got my first check and now I am into the second month working on the next $30.00 check.

Only Cash Surveys

The name is somewhat misleading because, until you reach $50.00, your choices of redemption are basically worthless gift cards. At $12.00 you are offered the choice between TWO magazine subscriptions, at $15.00 the choice between 3 magazines, at $25 you can either get a Amazon Gift Card or a Virtual Shopping Card.

To see some cash, you will need to slave away to get to $50.00. Then you can get paid in form of a PayPal Visa Card, and they take a 3% processing fee for that.

The GOOD POINT of Only Cash Survey is that they do have a lot of surveys for you on a daily basis (as can be seen on the chart above). Their drawback is, and there is one with all these sites, that they have an extremely long “PENDING” period, in many cases 6 to 8 weeks

That means that the money you earned is pending and you have to wait until your survey has been approved. I never could find out who the approving does and what the criteria may be.

 The PROS and CONS

PROS:

  • Free to sign-upmaking money with surveys
  • Many sites to work with
  • You are your own boss
  • Work from home
  • You do make some extra money

CONS:

  • Too many surveys you can not qualify for
  • Surveys don’t pay enough
  • You work for a very low hourly wage

My Summary:

Taking surveys may be a good way for you to make some extra money in your spare time. This is not a “Get Rich Scheme” and you will not be able to make a decent living on taking surveys alone. If you are ready to give it a try, jump right in and sign up with as many sites as you can. Some extra cash is always handy and will do you no harm.

  1. Hello, I enjoy reading all of your post.
I wanted to write a little comment to support you.

  2. Hi John,
Good work. I was amazed after being offered money to complete surveys to continually be put out shortly after the start or further in. I quit after the third time. Obviously not the survey answers they were looking for since they already knew the age and area demographic I belonged in. So I don’t take to much notice of any survey results.

    • Thanks for your comment. I believe they are getting some real money paid but give us just some crumbs. The most annoying thing however, is when you started and are in already 5 min. or longer, they disqualify you. I just gave up and even didn’t try to reach a $50.00 at one site to get a gift card. Too exhausting and a waste of time

    • You answered qualifying questions but did not qualify, Sorry but you just took a survey and did not get paid for it.

  3. Woah this blog is magnificent i really like studying your posts. Keep up the great work! You know, many persons are searching around for this info, you could help them greatly.
